明渠流量计的测量原理是，在明渠中设置标准化了的量水堰槽，并在规定位置测量水位，使流过堰槽的流量与水位成单值关系；测量出水位，超声波明渠流量计根据相应的流量公式或经验公式将其换算成流量值来。
 
超声波明渠流量计渠道内的流量越大，槽堰内液位越高；流量越小，液位越低。一般的渠道，液位与流量没有确定的对应关系。因为同样的水深，流量的大小，还与渠道的横截面积、坡度、粗糙度有关。在渠道内安装槽堰，由于堰的缺口或槽的缩口比渠道的横截面积小，因此，渠道上游水位与流量的对应关系主要取决于槽堰的几何尺寸。同样的槽堰放在不同的渠道上，相同的液位对应相同的流量。槽堰把流量转成了液位 明渠流量计所用的液位计一般采用两种型式，超声波液位计和静压式液位计。
